How to enable commercial streaming media like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu

Hello Everyone!

With the update to v45.1.20 of CloudReady came a long requested feature which we're excited to give to you all:

Netflix Support

(and other protected content)

This won't work automatically. Instead, there are a few steps necessary before you're ready to binge-watch Scrubs on your CloudReady device. They're simple and fast, and detailed below.

First install Widevine and enable Proprietary Media Components (will make Hulu, Amazon Prime video work):

  1. Update or freshly install CloudReady (instructions here)
  2. Log in
  3. Go into your "Settings" menu and find the "Widevine" and "Proprietary Media Components"
  4. Click "Install" for both and wait for it to confirm a successful install
    1. If it fails, reboot and try again - make sure you're connected to network.
    2. When complete the button will change to "Check for Updates"
  5. Reboot your CloudReady machine (notifications will prompt you to do this)
  6. Log in again

The above steps will get Amazon Prime and Hulu playback working for you, among others.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: the info below is no longer relevant as of v56 of CloudReady. Netflix now works as long as Widevine is installed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To get Netflix Working too:

  1.  Install this extension
    1. Once the extension is installed, you should see the icon in the top-right corner of you browser
  2. Right click the browser icon and choose "Options"
  3. You'll open a menu where you can add a custom user-agent that will look like:
  4. Fill in the blanks to create a new User-Agent option with the following info:
    1. Name: "CloudReady Widevine"
    2. String: "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/52.0.2709.0 Safari/537.36"
    3. Group: "Chrome" (should be filled automatically)
    4. Append: "Replace"
    5. Indicator Flag: "IE"
  5. When all that is filled in, click "Add"
  6. As mentioned in comments, you can add netflix.com as a permanent-spoof domain

Once you've done all that, when visiting a Widevine protected page, you can left-click the user-agent extension and select "Chrome:CloudReady Widevine" to enable playback.

NOTE: While we are optimistic that protected content all over the web will work this way, we are unable to test every service available. Netflix works, and we welcome your comments on any other services which you can confirm working!

We're really excited to help CloudReady become an increasingly robust OS option for everyone - for many, we hope this final piece will make it a true daily-driver OS.

Cheers!

-Forrest

Thank you, a very nice workaround to the problem. Works as advertised with Netflix. Should note however, that I tried some online banking shortly thereafter and was not able to work with 'unsupported browser'. It took a while for me to figure it out but I was able to click the 'auto-switcher' extension icon back on Chrome browser and then choose 'Default' setting to get back to the original configuration.

Nicely done! Netflix now works on my Samsung NF210, along with a few other sites that I hadn't been able to watch video off of.

    Daniel -

Try reinstalling the whole OS (or remaking your installer USB, if you're booting from USB), and if that doesn't resolve the trouble you should create a new topic where we can dig in properly.

Hey Geo - I don't have a log in that satisfies the demands of that website - I can't really dig into the issue without access to the media.

Before we do a password-exchange dance, can you check if Netflix streaming is working for you? If not, we probably just need to troubleshoot your set up. (PS - if you don't mind, open a new topic in "General" with this info so we can dive deeper and leave notes for others in the future!).

Hi Forest :) I don't have a Netflix account to test streaming. I own Chromebooks and they stream TBS. My Chromebooks have 2 Gigs of RAM which is the same as this Toshiba NB505 netbook. I can try to disable the extensions and see if streaming works. I'll let you know :)

I disabled my extensions and streaming still doesn't work on TBS. Everything else works fine :) Thanks for your help :)

    Geo -

I'll see if I can come up with a log in to test this personally in the next few days - I don't think I'll be able to fix it for you in the short term, but hopefully I can identify what the problem is for you, and give you some info on whether we'll be able to address it in the short term.

Hi, I just converted an old laptop. Installation was a breeze, and following this guide I got Netflix & BBC iPlayer to work, nice work, brilliant product! I can't get UK's Channel 4 to work though: www.channel4.com/on-demand After clicking the UA extension on, the stream just spins. Any ideas on this one?

You can also go to "Options"-->"Permanent spoof list" and add "netflix.com" as the domain and choose the new profile as the agent. This will automatically use this UA when opening Netflix.

Also on "Other settings", it might be useful to enable "Set user-agent spoof per tab" so that you don't have to un-spoof when opening new tabs.

Excellent! Works on HP Pavilion G6. And thanks to Giorgos Katsikis for the tip on permanent spoof list.

    Forest:
Followed the steps above completely. I am still getting this error (Error Code: M7111-1957-205032) when trying to stream Netflix. I have been unable to get this to work. Latitude E6410 with version 46.

It works without the extension (the User-Agent switcher). I just did a clean install on a Dell D420 and in the settings installed "Widevine Content Decryption Modul". After a restart I tested without the user-agent switcher and films in Netflix worked fine! I have a Swedish Netflix account.

    Fredrik:
I tried that (without the user-agent switcher) and it still gave me the same error. Keeps telling me that my session has expired and I need to logout and try again. Not sure why its doing that.

I'm beginning to suspect that US vs elsewhere this may vary. Anybody in the US having issues?

Jason - you may want to try without the UAswitcher too.

    Tony Lettkeman

I'm in US. I installed the Widevine CDM. I installed the useragent switcher. I run Netflix and get M7083-2107 when using the UA. If I set it back to default, gives me the error C7121. That's it, just C7121 with nothing else behind it. All other extensions are turned off and I've cleaned cookies and reset settings even. At one point I got the error: M7111-1957-205032 Like Jason Palmer above and going to https://www.netflix.com/clearcookies and logging back in fixed that part.

    edit:

I'm not sure what happened, but I went ahead an rebooted again after I had been messing with everything.  All of a sudden Netflix is working with the WideVine UserAgent from above.  I'm on a cheesy Acer One ZG5 and it's running pretty good quality.

I also received all the error codes as Tony Lettkeman on my Toshiba Satellite l655-s5050. And just like above, I went into advanced settings to clear my cookies. What do you know, the agent switcher whirred life into Netflix once again. Thank you very much for this tutorial.

I was able to clear Netflix cookies only by visiting http://netflix.com/clearcookies and Netflix now plays like a charm! Hooray!

I believe I've followed all the instructions above exactly, including clearing cookies both through Chromium and https://www.netflix.com/clearcookies and rebooting. But each time I try to play something on Netflix, I get the error M7111-1957-205032 with "Your Netflix session expired. Please sign out and sign in again...."  (I am in the U.S.)

    Geoge -

Are you livebooting via USB or locally installed?
Maybe best to open a new thread if you want to troubleshoot :-)
