Today I successfully installed CloudReady free on an old Sony VAIO VPCZ212GX/CB laptop had laying around. This was a strange beast to get running but worked in the end.
At power on, press F2 to drop into BIOS settings, enable External Storage in Boot Options to boot from USB flash drive, Save and Exit.
Once CloudReady live USB booted, I tried to use the "Install CloudReady" option in menu but it just said "Installation failed". So I dropped into the chronos shell via Ctrl-Alt-F2 and installed from there instead. sudo su - password chrome .
parted /dev/sda print all
Verified that /dev/sda is internal 128 GB SSD. Installed with:
chromeos-install --skip_dst_removable --dst /dev/sda
After that command ran to completion, I did as it said. Shutdown (via poweroff command), removed USB flash drive and booted back into CloudReady on SSD.
