i created a usb bootable drive using the usb maker as instructed here https://www.neverware.com/freedownload
then i followed these instructions
however, when i boot from the usb drive, it just loads the OS. it doesn't present me with an option to install the OS on the local drive.
specs, background and how why i got here:
i'm trying to install on an dell inspiron 1705 - core 2 duo 2GHz / 2GB DDR2 ram - yes, it's old. but i had once installed cloud ready using the instructions here: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/10/turning-a-crappy-old-windows-pc-into-a-full-fledged-chromebook-with-cloudready/ - with the Chromebook Recovery utility; that worked and i was able to use the old laptop.
the utility seems to download the file
recently i found it going into a boot loop "Your system is repairing itself"
so i thought, let me re-install... and the rest is history.
