Is install on MacOS now defunct with non support of Google from Jun 21?
I followed all steps meticulously and repeatedly but couldn't manage an external drive for a MacOs Monterey; the msg. at the Chrome recovery stage was of no support; does this mean that there is no hope of creating a bootable drive - very apparently from my experience; if so shouldn't Neverware remove any ref. to the possibility from their site?

I don't understand your problem.
1. Are you trying to install CloudReady on a Mac. If so your description is too vague. Macs like PCs are made with various components. You must be specific to the year and model to get help.
2. Managing an external drive is a different proposition than installing CR on the hard drive. Again you must be very specific to hope for help with your problem.

1. Yes; as stated I followed the steps meticulously for Intel iMac without the 2017 security. At one stage a UEFI boot option appeared in Recovery mode; clicking on it resulted in a flash of what looked like a page of writing followed by a small cursor like rectangle in the middle of the screen and a colourful small rectangle in the top left corner (that seemed close and maybe a security stop by Apple OS.) I wonder about formatting; after "erasing" using Chrome Recovery Utility (msg about no longer supported came up which was the only element not mentioned in the "Neverware" guide (doubts about Sandisk came up later! but I also tried with an external SSD without success. I don't know what "no longer supported" mentioned earlier means.

Starting with MacOS Catalina and including Big Sur and Monterey, Apple changed the formatting of the internal drives to APFS which is actually nested partitions that show up as a single drive.

Plus they include a hardware security chip in Intel Macs.

I don't have access to a current Intel Mac but have read you need to disable the security boot features (SIP) to boot from an external drive. I have no way of confirming this will help you:

Can't see a way to specify whom a reply is to - but what or where would APFS apply and why wouldn't Neverware indicate this on their (apparently live/active site?) I've lost track but just checked and I had tried APFS on both external drives. Chrome Recovery won't recognize an external SSD which seems to rule out the most likely option; I might try one more time with a non Sandisk drive (went to a large Office supply shop yesterday - only Sandisk!) Security chip isn't on this iMac but Apple seem somewhat infamous for having "security" features which are a serious limitation for some users. I've had a number of cases where no meaningful error msg. comes up where a specific issue has stopped progress on Apple (not related to OS download) just a general concern that this sort of thing may apply elsewhere.

Just tried again with a non Sandisk USB Flashdrive; this time I note that the downloaded USB installer is not used at any point according to the instructions which I strongly suspect are missing some necessary step but its not easy to guess i.e. USB installer downloaded to computer .. and then what? Does it somehow take effect without any further reference to it? The next step indicated was to go into Chrome Recovery and then select the Cloudready OS which I did and got the same small rectangles mentioned earlier.

Not totally clear from your narrative, but it seems you're attempting to install Cloudready to an external drive? Not an installer but actual functioning OS?
Current MacOS does not permit booting from an external drive unless you go into recovery mode and turn off boot security in the MacOS.
While MacOS uses APFS format drives, Cloudready boots from a FAT boot loader and then uses linux format partitioning of the OS...as I understand it.
To build the Cloudready USB installer I use Etcher (somewhat iffy) or Chrome browser extension Chromebook Recovery Utility (more reliable). I have only Sandisk USB thumb drives and they all work OK.
Cryptic error messages are not unique to Apple. I think there is special class developers take to speak gibberish.

I've lost track of what I've done but latest attempt using a non Sandisk USB drive has stopped at the Chrome reinstall stage with "Can't unzip file"; I'm sure I tried the Neverware USB maker and got as far as the small rectangles mentioned earlier. I keep reading about Mac OS security but this seems to only relate to post 2017 iMacs with the "T2" something; no security msg. comes up at the booting stage and nor have I found any sort of "allow boot from external drive" option but do hope its there somewhere.
