Lincoln Flick, you are not specific enough. What is the make and specific model of your device? Linux does not install on CloudReady vs 96. You need to switch to Chrome OS Flex vs 101 to have any success.

First of all I already tried Chrome OS flex with no success because my wifi doesn’t show up so I cannot switch and CloudReady is my only option until my wife driver is supported. My Device is an HP Pavilion g4-1215dx.

Lincoln Flick, Linux Virtual Machine is not guaranteed to run on CloudReady, since a device may have unmitigated CPU vulnerabilities.  The upstream ChromiumOS developers put checks in place since version 92 that prevent a Virtual Linux container from installing/running if the CPU has vulnerabilities which might allow the virtual container to have malicious (or accidental) impacts to the host operating system.

    • Linux development environment: As of v92 Linux development environment, also known as Crostini or Linux (Beta), requires CPU vulnerabilities to be mitigated and will not run with unmitigated vulnerabilities.

More information is available here: https://cloudreadykb.neverware.com/s/article/Linux-Beta-support

NeverWare have introduced run-time microcode patching of Intel CPUs as a step towards allowing CloudReady to run virtual containers on vulnerable CPUs.  However, a fully stable Linux container within CloudReady / OS Flex may yet be some way off.  If linux applications are an absolute necessity, you are better advised to install a native linux operating system, or purchase an official and in-support Chromebook, on which the Linux container will run (Google have a specific list of their supported devices, so can patch the specific CPUs in use).

But there are no updates for my bios, I already checked so what do I do now, if anything

Lincoln Flick I posted some links in the below thread; read up if you want to understand the situation of Crostini on CloudReady recently and currently:

    https://neverware.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/5343076778131-Why-I-cant-Install-Linux-In-Cloud-Ready-96-4-36-Home-Build-stable-channel-64bit

What to do now? If your BIOS is fully updated and you still can't get Crostini to work, then there is no supported solution within CloudReady for now. There's an unofficial user-submitted solution in one of the links I sent requiring advanced Linux knowledge that involves modifying the root filesystem and installing the microcode patches needed yourself to address the unmitigated CPU vulnerabilities. You can try that but if you encounter issues in this complex process then you'll have to do your own research; it's likely that no one here will guide you step-by-step if you go that route.

As Michael said above, foolproof alternatives are to just install a real Linux distro or to buy an official Chromebook.

Other unofficial, not foolproof, more adventurous recommendations below; again here, you'll have to do some more research on your own:

    1) Install Chrome OS Flex and find a workaround to get connected to the internet (ethernet, USB tethering, etc.). Then move Chrome OS Flex to the Beta channel and check for updates to move to the latest Beta build. It may or may not fix your wifi driver issues. Now try to run Crostini. **Still no assurances here, be prepared that it still may not work**

    2) Try the third-party Brunch Chrome OS project. Search on Google for their Github page to see the installation instructions. **Still no assurances here, but personal experience and others' accounts say that Brunch is stable and Crostini works for most. Also take note, the Brunch project is not endorsed by or affiliated with Google / Neverware in any way.**

Joel R., nailed the discussion. CR vs 96.4.36 (Home Build) stable-channel 64-bit does not support  Linux. Now supposedly Chrome Flex will, give it a try.

Flex doesn’t work on my system due to my Wi-Fi driver not working. Will google in the very near future give support to more Wi-Fi driver because that is the only thing that’s in my way.

Lincoln Flick, 1. Are you saying the Vs 96.4.36 Wi-Fi does work, but Flex does not?

    2. This is on 2012 HP Pavilion g4-1215dx.?

My HP Pavillion G4-1035 TU also has issue with Broadcom Wi-fi driver as it doesn't detect any Wi-fi network available.

Hi Lincoln Flick and nangtienngu can you both send logs from CloudReady and reference this post? I want to look into which WiFi chipsets your devices have and understand why it isn't working in Flex.

If it helps, Log files can be sent by doing one of the following:

    1. Press the key combination "alt+shift+i". A pop-up window should appear with the title "Tell us what's happening" - please describe the problem that you encountered in the box at the top of the window, attach any files that you deem necessary, and then select "send".

    2. Alternatively, you can go to three-dot hamburger menu in the top right corner of the browser, click "Help" > Report an issue > submit the logs.

    Hi IIya and Micheal,

I have just sent a log about my Cloudready device. I hope that you can figure out the issue and fix it in the near future. Thank you very much.

    Dear IIya,

I have just resent the log after installing Cloudready on my device. I didn't recognize that my brother use live-boot, not installed into the system.

Hi Lincoln Flick - Thanks for sending the logs; the wifi chipset (RT5390) you have is on our list and we are working on it in Flex still.

Hi nangtienngu -  Thanks for sending your logs again. Your wifi should work in Flex. When was the last time you tried Flex? Can you try again? Would you be able to send logs from Flex with a wired connection?

    Hi IIya,

I tried to install Flex 2 week ago without success. At that time, I didn't connect the Internet via Ethernet; only used Wifi connection but it didn't detect any network available, so I ended up reinstall Cloudready again. Maybe I 'll do it again at the weekend becuse I am so busy at work.

    Hi IIya,

After I came home from work, I tried to reinstall Chromes OS Flex right away, but it still didn't work. The Wifi doesn't show any network available. In addition, I also gave it a try via Ethernet; however, it somehow disconnected the Ethernet suddendly after few minutes, then I had to unplugged the Ethernet and plugged it back again. Although I managed to sign in and synced, but I gave up because the Ethernet kept disconnecting after every 2 or 3 minutes. As a result, I had to keep re-plugged the Ethernet after some minutes. Finally, I couIdn't send the log from Flex yet. I really don't understand what went wong.

Update 1: One more weird thing that I forgot to mention that the light of my Wifi physical button( on my HP laptop it's F12) kept glowing which was stranged and I couldn't turn it off. The button indicated that my laptop had been disconnected from the Internet when the light was on. On Windows and other Linux distros, it always turn off, so I can use the Ethernet or Wifi.

Update 2: I did a live-boot Chrome OS Flex , connected via the Ethernet and sent the log from there before it was disconnected.

Update 3: I find out that my Wi-fi chipset is Broadcom Limited BCM4313.

I re-installed Flex on my laptop this morning. The result was the same as the last two times before with the WiFi couldn't connect to any network available because it didn't detect anything. I also tried to use the Internet, logged into my account and switched to Beta Channel but the issue still happen. But at least, the Ethernet seemed to work OK. I hope that the Cloudready / Chrome OS Flex team can add more WiFi drivers for next few updates of Flex.

Thank you so much for looking into it, this will help me out so much, I would appreciate if you could make sure I know when neverware and google have it fixed so I can try to install, again thank you so much, you have been the most help then others who just say flat out no.

Lincoln Flick In that case, I don't think there's a way back after the upgrade, you'll probably need to reinstall CloudReady fresh. Ilya did say they are "working on it" regarding your wifi chipset, so it's likely a matter of time. If you have any workarounds to get connected such as a USB wifi adapter or an ethernet port, then maybe you can also experiment on Flex for now before returning to CloudReady and see if Linux / Crostini works for you, since it is after all the initial topic of this post.

I will stay on Flex and experiment with it and look around as I don’t have a use for the device as of right now so I am free to wait for my chipset to be supported

    Dear Ilya G,

My HP model is very similar to nangtienngu's one ( HP Pavilion G4 1036-TU, the only difference is the storage of two devices) and it also has Broadcom BCMC 4313 Wi-Fi chipset which isn't working on Flex. I have tried to install Flex several times using different types of USB from Flex version 100 to the 102( build 1485 in Chromebook Recovery Utilities), but the results stayed the same as my laptop didn't recognize and connect to any Wi-Fi network available. So I assume that the drivers for this kind of chipset is still missing or not compatible.
